Andrew Nicholson: April 2008 Archives

Came across this from Fake Steve Jobs, loved it, had to repost...

Thoroughly enjoyed my extended weekend a few days ago - thought I'd share some of what I got up to.

Thursday morning

DSTO, being a Defence body, had an ANZAC service on Thursday morning. I was a little disappointed at how few turned out to attend - maybe 1 in 7? It's only 15 minutes out of your day, people - show some respect! One wonders what was so important that it couldn't wait another quarter-hour - especially considering the general culture of very flexible deadlines that there seems to be here. Hmm.

Thursday evening - Saturday

From the Thursday night to Saturday lunch time, I attended a weekend away hosted by one of the churches I attend - the 7pm service at Holy Trinity Anglican . This was held down at Victor Harbour, so it was nice to be able to see some more of South Australia while down there.

The camp was held in a wonderful spirit - around 70 attended, and were treated to great music, and thought-provoking talks given by Senior Pastor Paul Harrington on the nature of Faith. Campers were challenged to look at what they were putting their faith in, not "how much they had". The theme verse for the talks was Romans 4:21:
"...being fully convinced that God has the power to do what He had promised" (NIV)

Sunday

Very little - still recovering from camp!

So there you have it - my ANZAC weekend. If anyone is interested in the talks from the camp, I believe they will be up on the HT website in the not-too-distant future.

For some strange and inexplicable reason, I've been receiving a whole stack of new Twitter followers - 21 in the past 4 days. For the past few months, the number of new followers was relatively stagnant, not growing much at all.

It made me wonder if there's a tipping point, where all of a sudden you reach "critical mass", and you generate enough interest from your followers that you start getting new ones "just because"...

Time will tell, I suppose. I'd better stay interesting! (no pressure...)
Have started listening to Mark Driscoll's series on Doctrine from Mars Hill Church, and really enjoyed the first sermon on the Trinity. This is a difficult doctrine for all Christians to grasp, as it pushes beyond what we as finite beings can grasp. However, Pastor Driscoll treats the subject with the respect it deserves, while still being interesting and engaging. He gives compelling reasons why the orthodox Christian view of the Trinity is not contradictory or unnecessarily bizarre, but is in fact fundamental to a Christian view of just about everything.

I'm looking forward to the rest in the series.
makes an IBL student healthy, wealthy, and wise. Well, not so much of the wealthy. Maybe not quite so wise, either. Hmm.

As of this morning, I'm trying out coming in to work super-early (like 7am early) and leaving early too. This is not an original idea, but one I've borrowed from a couple other IBL students. The theory goes that allowing oneself to leave early makes managing personal affairs a lot easier, because the shops and amenities are still open after you've finished work. It also means that if, for some reason, you have to stay later anyway, then your flex-time goes up substantially. So, in theory at least, a win-win.

The only downside? Having to get up earlier. Let's hope it works.

If you're reading this, you've stumbled across my virtual notebook, where I'll be posting anything and everything that occurs to, pops up in, or otherwise manifests to my poor overloaded brain.

Allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Andrew Nicholson. I'm a 3rd-year student at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. I'm studying towards a Bachelor of Science (Professional Software Development). Yes, it's a strange name.

As part of the aforementioned degree, 2008 sees me in Adelaide, spending 12 months with the Defence Science & Technology Organisation - both a welcome break from the books, and a chance to apply what I've learned to real-world(?) applications and scenarios.

I have many and diverse interests, which will doubtless turn up on these pages as time passes. The top three would have to be music, coffee, and people.

I look forward to hearing from you, dear reader!
